bitcoin?

Three sessions in Auckland for people buying their first bitcoin, and for people who own some but leave it sitting on an exchange.

  • Two free sessions

    No prior experience needed

  • One paid workshop

Hands-on self-custody, run by Bitcoin Journey

  • Bring photo ID

Open and verify a Stacked account at either basics session

Where you are starting from

Start here

You have never owned any bitcoin

You have read about it for years and never got round to it, or you have never been sure who to trust with the first purchase. Come to a basics session. You will leave understanding what you own, and if you want, with an account open and verified.

Next step

You own bitcoin, but a company holds it

Your bitcoin sits on an exchange and you have never moved it off. Friday is a working session on holding your own keys: receiving, sending, backing up, and recovering it if something goes wrong.

The three sessions

Come to one, or come to all three. The two basics sessions cover the same ground at different times.

Free Session one

Bitcoin basics

Wednesday 16 September

6.00pm · 2 hours · Beginner

The same session as Thursday, in the evening. Pick whichever suits your week - there is no need to come to both.

What it covers

  • What bitcoin is and how it works
  • What makes it different from everything else calling itself digital money
  • What people actually use it for
  • A live bitcoin transaction, done in front of you
  • Your questions, answered in the room

Useful if you would rather come after work than take time out of the day.

Free Session two

Bitcoin basics

Thursday 17 September

10.30am · 2 hours · Beginner

The same session as Wednesday, in the morning.

Useful if a 6pm start does not work, or if a weekday morning suits you better.

Ticketed Session three

Self-custody workshop

Friday 18 September

10.00am · 2.5 hours · Intermediate

What it covers

  • Setting up a hardware wallet and generating your own keys
  • Receiving, sending and storing it for the long term
  • What to do, and what to avoid at all costs
  • Keeping fees down and your privacy intact

NZ$350

Includes a hardware wallet to take home and NZ$5 of bitcoin to practise with. Bring a laptop.

Booked separately from the free sessions.

Run by Bitcoin Journey

Bring your passport or driver licence

Stacked staff will be at both basics sessions to help anyone who wants to open an account do it there and then. Most people who mean to finish it at home never do. Bring photo ID and you can finish it before you leave.

There is a box at checkout to tell us you are bringing ID, which is how we know how many people to staff the desk for. Opening an account is optional, and nobody has to buy anything to attend.

  • NZ passport
  • NZ driver licence
  • Overseas passport

Rated five out of five.

I attended the Understanding Bitcoin workshop run by Francisco. I learnt a lot of new information about the technology and how bitcoin works. The free course is very informative and will kick start your bitcoin journey. Highly recommend.

Rated five out of five.

As someone new to the Bitcoin space, my husband and I recently attended two workshops held by Francisco here in Queenstown. Both sessions were extremely well delivered and packed with valuable insights. The content provided a clear understanding of the fundamentals, including how buying, selling, and self-custody work. A big thank you to Bitcoin Journey for supporting our own learning journey!

Rated five out of five.

I attended the understanding bitcoin workshop yesterday and found it incredibly valuable. The session was well-structured, easy to follow, and explained concepts in a way that made a complicated topic much more approachable. Francisco was knowledgeable and engaging, taking the time to answer questions and give real-world examples that made everything click. I walked away with a much clearer understanding of how Bitcoin works, its potential uses, and the risks to be aware of. I'd highly recommend this workshop to anyone who's curious about Bitcoin but doesn't know where to start.

What happens next

  • Pick a date

Wednesday evening or Thursday morning. They are the same session, so choose whichever suits your week rather than booking both.

  • Tell us if you are bringing photo ID

One tick at checkout. It tells us how many people to staff the verification desk for, and it commits you to nothing.

  • The Friday workshop books separately

Wednesday and Thursday are free and book here. The self-custody workshop has its own listing, its own ten places, and its own checkout.

Booking is handled by Humanitix. You can opt in there to hear from Stacked, and separately to hear from Bitcoin Journey.
